Fight spread of disinformation ahead of 2022 elections –UP professor

The technology-savvy youth must lead the way in encouraging their families to fact check information especially those coming from social media as the national election nears next year.

“Fact checking disinformation begins at home… I think it’s worthwhile conversation to start at home about fake news because polarization has penetrated even in the households, we know that certain families would not even talk to one another on the basis of political opinions,” University of the Philippines professor Aries Arugay said in an online webinar organized by the UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies.

He said young people are more knowledgeable on the use of technology and know where to access legitimate sources online.

“It must begin at home for the youth. They are more savvy I think in the use of this technology, they were born with this technology unlike us,” he added.

He also advised the public to report fake news and trolls.

“Report fake news and trolls quite diligently, don’t feed the trolls.  If the troll made a comment on your post, delete it because if you don’t, then the trolls will get the monetary compensation for doing the work,” the professor said.—Richa Noriega/LDF, GMA News
