Senate OKs on 3rd reading bill regulating vape products

Voting 19-2-2, the Senate on Thursday approved on third and final reading a bill regulating vaporized nicotine and non-nicotine products.

Senators Pia Cayetano and Francis Pangilinan voted against Senate Bill 2239 while Senators Bong Go and Manny Pacquiao abstained.

SB 2239 seeks to regulate the importation, manufacture, sale, packaging, distribution, use, and communication of vaporized nicotine and non-nicotine products.

Under SB 2239, minors are not allowed to buy vaporized nicotine products and retailers should verify the age of the buyers by presenting a valid ID during the transaction.

This also applies to online sale of the vape products where the age verification will be done upon the delivery of the products.

One of the contentious provision of the bill was the government body which will regulate the vape products.

The proposed bill will authorize the Department of Trade and Industry to regulate the vape products instead of the Food and Drug Administration.

Cayetano, one of the senators who voted against the bill, pushed for the FDA’s regulation of the vape products. However, the senators voted against her proposal. — RSJ, GMA News
