The Philippine National Police said Sunday that it has ordered an investigation into the murder of a journalist in Davao del Sur inside his home over the weekend.
Earlier, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) reported that Orlando “Don Don” Dinoy, reporter for Newsline.Ph and a block time anchor of Energy FM in Digos City, was gunned down at his rented apartment in Bansalan.
In a statement, PNP chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar said, “We will look into all the possible angles on this case and we are also asking the help of our kababayan to provide us with any information that could lead to the resolution of this case.”
Eleazar also offered his condolences to the family of Dinoy, adding that the regional office assigned to Davao del Sur will ensure justice for for the victim.
Likewise, Eleazar said they are coordinating with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) to ensure that they will probe all cases of harassment against the members of the press.
“We will not accept this type of attack against media freedom as stated under the 1987 Constitution that press freedom must be protected,” Eleazar said in Filipino.
Dinoy’s killing came a day after the Philippines was included among the worst countries to be, wherein cases of journalists’ murder have remained unsolved as stated in the Committee to Protect Journalists’ (CPJ) Global Impunity Index 2021.
In another statement, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said he will “definitely” order the PTFoMS to lead and coordinate with the police probe into Dinoy’s death.
He, likewise, urged journalists to report to the PTFoMS their concerns on security or reports of harassment.
“We are calling on all journalists and media persons who feel that their personal security is at risk to immediately inform the PTFoMS, through its executive director Joel Egco, so that the task force may take all the necessary protective or preemptive measures,” he Guevarra said. —LBG, GMA News
