No talking or eating on public transport, expert urges as capacity rises to 70%

With public transport now allowed to fill to 70% capacity, an infectious diseases expert is cautioning Filipinos not to eat or talk on mass transportation to minimize the risk of COVID-19 spread.

“Wearing face mask and at the same time not talking will decrease transmission in fact up to 95%,” said Dr. Rontgene Solante in Maki Pulido’s “24 Oras” report on Thursday.

“Plus if you have a very good ventilation, the more na mas mababa ang density ng mikrobyo maski di ka nag physical distance [the density of microbes will be even less even if there is no physical distancing],” he added.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Thursday started its 30-day pilot study on the gradual increase for passenger capacities in the National Capital Region (NCR) and the provinces of Bulacan, Rizal, Cavite, and Laguna.

Under the new scheme, traditional jeepney drivers will be allowed to accommodate an additional four to five passengers.

During the first day, the Inter-Agency Council for Traffic said they caught PUVs accommodating more than 70% capacity. However, they let off these errant PUV drivers with a warning. — Consuelo Marquez/BM, GMA News
