The Philippine government will allot around 7 million doses for the third and booster shots of some priority groups against COVID-19, vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. said Tuesday.
In a statement, Galvez said the government will allot 2 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines for healthcare workers and 5 million doses for immunocompromised individuals and senior citizens.
“Sa healthcare workers, we will allot more or less 2 million doses and we have enough doses for them. Irregardless of brand, mayroon po tayo na nakatabi,” Galvez said.
“And then for the immunocompromised and elderly, we will be requiring 5 million, and we also have enough doses with the succeeding deliveries,” he added.
This was after the DOH has given the go signal for booster and additional shots of COVID-19 vaccines for healthcare workers and the elderly within the year. The inoculation, however, may spill over into 2022
On Monday, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the agency has submitted its letter of intent for the application of the EUA to the Food and Drug Administration and that it is working on completing the required documents.
Galvez said the vaccination may begin by November.
Vergeire previously said that booster shots are given when immunity is starting to wane off after several months since receiving the vaccine.
On the other hand, additional doses, or the third doses, are given to individuals who cannot mount the appropriate immunity against the sickness.
100 million vaccines
Meanwhile, Galvez said the Philippines will have received 100 million vaccines by this week as more than 26.3 million have been added to the inventory this October.
As of October 25, a total of 97,678,340 doses have arrived in the country. Galvez said 56.25 million doses have been administered nationwide.
Of the 97 million doses, Galvez said 24.33 million doses were donated through the COVAX facility, while 4.64 million were donations from bilateral partners.
The government procured 60.72 million while 7.89 million were procured by local government units and the private sector.
Meanwhile, 25 million Filipinos have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The Philippines earlier reported 4,393 new COVID-19 infections, bringing the nationwide tally to 2,765,672 and active cases to 53,642.—AOL, GMA News
