Senator Richard Gordon is seeking reelection in the May 2022 polls.
Gordon made the decision even as he previously considered running for president again.
His lawyer, Inkly Reyes, filed his certificate of candidacy for senator under the Bagumbayan VNP Movement before the Commission on Elections in Pasay City on Friday.
President Rodrigo Duterte earlier vowed to campaign against Gordon should he decide to run for public office next year.
The lawmaker is leading the Senate investigation into the alleged irregularities in the government’s expenditures on COVID-19 response, which infuriated Duterte, who claimed there was no corruption behind the emergency purchases.
Gordon was first elected to a six-year term in the Senate in 2004. He ran for president in 2010, but lost to the late Benigno Aquino III.
