‘Learning aides’ help bridge homeschool gaps amid COVID-19 pandemic

Students, parents, and teachers are all experiencing challenges as the country shifted to distance learning amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Bea Iglesia’s report on “Stand for Truth” on Wednesday, over 19.8 million students in public schools are challenged by modular learning. Of this, 86.7% students said it has been hard for them compared to the traditional face-to-face classes.

With this, the Department of Education hired more than 13,500 learning support aides nationwide to help teachers and parents facilitate the schooling of students at home.

Among them is Teacher Joyce Borjal, an LSA in Taytay, Rizal.

Borjal, who was a private school teacher, said being an LSA is a new challenge for her since she is used to being inside a classroom.

“Noong unang araw ko sa field, parang na-shock ako kasi hindi naman ako sanay ‘yung madadaanan mo eskinita na lang may nag-iinom pa, pero sabi ko nga sa sarili ko, kailangan namin itong gawin,” Borjal said.

“Hindi naman ito para sa amin kundi para sa mga batang matutulungan namin na maabot ‘yung kanilang mga pangarap,” she added.

Donnalynn Berto also shared that it is fulfilling to be an LSA because she gets to help, not only the students, but also their parents.

Meanwhile, Lovely Navelgas said walking for miles to reach her students in Barangay Sapa Pequena in Burgos, Pangasinan is not a big deal as long as she gets to help other people.

“Sobrang layo po nila para i-reach out pero siyempre, kailangan nila ng tulong kaya kahit malayo, pupuntahan, kahit maglakad pa ‘yan,” she said.
