Religious, media most trusted institutions amid COVID-19 pandemic

Religious leaders and journalists are among the most trusted institutions over the past two years under the COVID-19 pandemic, a study showed.

According to the Philippine Trust Index 2021 by EON Communications, religious leaders garnered 90% trust (51% moderate trust, 39% extreme trust).

This was followed by journalists or media professionals with 83% trust (23% extreme trust, 60% moderate trust). Government leaders in the local government units ranked third with 79% (23% extreme trust, 56% moderate trust).

Trust on the media was highest among Generation X or those born from late 1960s to 1980s, with 79% trust rating and Generation Z, with 77% trust rating.

Baby Boomers  and Millennials both had 71% trust rating.

Broadcast media such as television and radio were the most trusted media channels.

Trust rating for television was at 92% while radio was at 88% in 2021.

Church, academe most trustworthy

Also, the Catholic Church was the most trusted in 2021, with 91% trust from respondents. Of the 91%, 37% had moderate trust for the Catholic Church while 54% had extreme trust for the institution.

This was higher than 2019 with 91% trust from respondents.

Following the religious institution,  Academe got the second spot with 90% trust rating (43% moderate trust, 47% extreme trust).

Meanwhile, the media took the third spot to 76% trust rating in 2021 (56% moderate trust, 20% extreme trust) from 69% (47% moderate trust, 22% extreme trust) in 2019.

The government landed the fourth spot after it maintained its trust rating score at 76% (56% moderate trust, 20% extreme trust) in 2021.

Trust rating for non-government organizations went up to 70% (53% moderate trust, 17% extreme trust) in 2021 from 37% (29% moderate, 8% extreme) in 2019.

Business is ‘biggest loser’

Meanwhile, the study also found that the business was the “biggest loser” in trustworthiness among the institutions.

Business posted a 66% trust rating (48% moderate, 18% extreme) in 2021, which is a decline from 71% trust rating (56% moderate, 15% extreme) in 2019.

In the age group, Millennials and baby boomers recorded the lowest trust rating for business.

Among millennials it had 60% while Baby Boomers had 56% on trustworthiness for businesses. -NB, GMA News
