The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is expecting around 15 presidential candidates and 12 vice presidential bets in Eleksyon 2022.
This was announced by Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez at a public briefing on Monday as he announced that there were 82 motu propio cases filed against aspirants who filed their certificates of candidacy for president, 15 for vice president, and 108 for senator.
“The largest number of presidential candidates that we’ve had is 10 if I’m not mistaken. That was in the late 90’s,” he added.
Jimenez explained that the Comelec did not declare aspirants as nuisance just to reduce the number of candidates who will be participating in the elections.
“‘Yung [the] usual na parameters ng nuisance for the most part, it is whether or not they have legitimate or bona fide intention to run for office,” he said.
Those who would be declared as nuisance candidates could still appeal the matter before the Comelec and, normally, these aspirants will try to secure a status quo ante order, Jimenez said.
The release of the final list of candidates is expected around December 15.
As of October 8, the poll body said that of those who filed their COCs, 97 were seeking the presidency, 29 the vice presidency, and 176 sought to run for senator.
