Senator Panfilo Lacson on Thursday said there should be more teeth against political turncoatism or the change of political party affiliation.
At a virtual media press conference, Lacson was asked for his opinion about political aspirants who switch parties at the last minute. For him, the political party must be strengthened and those who will switch parties must be held liable over their transfer.
Lacson pointed out that the sudden change of political party only shows disloyalty.
“Unang-una, dapat i-strengthen natin ‘yung political party system, ano. ‘Yung pag-swi-switch, ‘yung pag-tu-turncoat, usong-uso e. Parang nasa daily menu na natin. So, siguro bigyan natin ng ngipin ‘yung against turncoatism, ano, na kung saan mayroong karampatang parang responsibilidad o accountability pagka nag-switch ka ng partido nang hindi naaayon sa rhyme or reason,” Lacson said.
(First of all, we should strengthen the political party system. Those switching parties or the practice of turncoatism is very rampant. It’s like it’s already in the daily menu. So, we should give more teeth against it. There must be accountability if you switch parties without the right reason.)
“Puwedeng pagka nag-switch ka ng political party ay mayroong kaukulang—huwag na muna natin sabihing ‘parusa’—pero dapat mayroong pananagutan dahil nakagawian na natin kung sino ‘yung party in power nandoon lahat,” he added.
(There should be liability, not necessarily a sanction, to those who will switch parties.)
