DepEd: 658K teachers, personnel submit digital signatures for Eleksyon 2022 duties

At least 658,000 teachers and personnel have submitted their digital signatures  for the Philippine National Public Key Infrastructure (PNPKI) in preparation for Eleksyon 2022, the Department of Education (DepEd) said.

The PNPKI digital signature is a new requirement by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for all public school teachers who will serve as Electoral Board Members for the upcoming elections.

This is a “virtual key” that lets users encrypt or conceal data into a code and embed important transactions like email exchange in order to protect it from hackers, DepEd added.

According to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), which is in charge of the project, the PNPKI “will foster trust in the government by ensuring secure and reliable online transactions.”

“Data security is a priority especially during elections, and with the majority of our personnel and teachers having secured their digital signatures through PNPKI, we are equipping them well and getting ready for their tasks as members of the Electoral Board,” DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said in a news release.

Briones also earlier said that assisting their personnel to register for the PNPKI is part of their campaign for a “secure and peaceful” election.

Of the 658,000 signatures submitted as of October 29, 83% have already been validated for submission to the DICT.

Briones thanked the DICT for helping fast track the PNPKI applications of teachers with the Learning Management System (LMS) as the online platform. This allowed DepEd to file applications for the digital certificates in bulk and for the DICT to waive the submission of requirements.—Giselle Ombay/LDF, GMA News
