Calabarzon cops now using 72 out of 288 procured body cameras

At least 72 out of the 288 body cameras procured for the Philippine National Police (PNP)-Region 4A or Calabarzon are now being used by its personnel, according to a “24 Oras” report by John Consulta.

Footages from the body cameras can be viewed real time inside the newly-established command center of the region inside Camp Vicente Lim in Laguna.

“Mapapanood namin mismo what is happening on the ground during police operations, police interventions, and even buy-bust operations on illegal drugs, service of search warrants or service of warrants of arrest,” PNP-Police Regional Office 4A director Brigadier General Eliseo Cruz said.

The PNP-PRO4A intends to use the bodycams to speed up their patrols and crime response rate.

In March this year, nine activists were killed while six others were arrested in simultaneous police operations in Calabarzon in what was dubbed as  “Bloody Sunday.”

The incident prompted several groups and lawmakers to push anew for the use body cameras as physical evidence during police operations amid allegations of human rights violations in the death of the activists.

In July, the Supreme Court approved a resolution providing rules for the mandatory use of body-worn cameras during the execution of search and arrest warrants.

GPS tracking devices were inside the body cameras, radios and marked police vehicles for fast location tracing.

The headquarters is also connected to CCTV cameras along major highways and expressways, as well as records of most wanted and stolen vehicles for quick response.

The PNP-PRO4A aims to activate all 288 body cameras in time for the May elections next year.—Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA News
