Tugade recalls PNoy’s ‘pasagasa sa tren’ comment in reporting LRT-Cavite extension gains

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade on Tuesday night referred to a promise made by an official who said he would have himself run over by a train if the Light Rail Transit Cavite extension wasn’t finished.

In his report to President Rodrigo Duterte on Philippine rail system improvements, Tugade said the LRT-Cavite extension is expected to be operate partially in 2024.

“‘Yong LRT-1 Cavite extension kung saan may nagsabi noon na ‘pag hindi natuloy, magpapasagasa sa tren. Mr. President, partial operation is targeted during the first quarter of 2024,” Tugade said.

He said they are project completion by the second quarter of 2027.

The extension project aims to reduce travel time between Baclaran and Bacoor to 25 minutes.

“Tinatapos po natin ‘to at hindi ako nangako na papasagasa ako sa tren kasi alam kong matatapos,” Tugade said.

Tugade but it was then President Benigno Aquino III who said he and then Transportation secretary Joseph Abaya would be willing to be run over by a train if the LRT-1 extension project does not materialize by 2015.

Aquino made the remark in a speech ahead of the 2013 mid-term elections.

Abaya, meanwhile, said the public should not take Aquino’s statement literally.

He said the vow Aquino made was just an expression of his “eagerness” to pursue and complete the project.

Aquino died on June 24 due to renal disease secondary to diabetes. He was 61 years old. -NB, GMA News
