Applicants face challenges in mandatory driver’s education

At the Land Transportation Office (LTO) at Quezon City, several applicants, who are hoping to get their driver’s license renewed, lined up to take the recently required comprehensive driver’s education (CDE).

In Cedric Castillo’s “24 Oras” report, LTO personnel placed computers outside which allowed takers to review questions for the CDE.

One of the examinees was Ronel Lumangsod, who was confident that he will perform well.

“Alam ko naman po isasagot kasi professional rider po ako. Maraming akong alam sa kalsada, mga traffic signage,” he said while at the LTO review area.

(I know the questions well because I am a professional rider. I am knowledgeable on the roads and traffic signage.)

But upon taking the exam, the LTO personnel said Lumangsod received a 76% score. The passing rate is 50%.

He said he had difficulty answering because it was in English.

“Mayroong exam ng Tagalog, Bisaya, ngayon English po di ko mahabol yung iba. Ngayon, medyo di ko mahabol yung iba. ‘Yung iba malalim po ang question,” he said.

(Since the exam was in English, I wasn’t able to answer the other questions. I couldn’t understand other questions.)

For some motorists, the exam takes too much of their time.

“Mas madali dati, wala na exam, ngayon maano sa oras. Matagal na rin,” an applicant said.

(It was easier before when there was no exam.)

LTO had said the exam for driver’s license renewal is “free” and fully accessible through multiple channels.—Consuelo Marquez/LDF, GMA News
