The pilot run of the face-to-face classes in private schools is set to start on November 22, Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Leonor Briones said on Monday.
At the Palace briefing, Briones said the DepEd is eyeing to include 20 private schools including international academic institutions.
“Ang formal na [umpisa ng face-to-face classes] ay Nov. 15 [for the public schools], 22 for the private schools,” she said.
(The formal start of the face-to-face classes is on November 15 for public schools and November 22 for the private schools.)
From the initial 100 public schools participating in the pilot run, Briones requested that 20 private schools be added, which was approved by the Department of Health.
Briones said that, so far, only one international school has submitted its plan for the face-to-face classes to the DepEd, which will also be reviewed by the Department of Health.
In August, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) urged governments to resume in-person classes, noting that five countries, including the Philippines, have yet to reopen schools since the pandemic.
UNICEF said the right to learn of 27 million Filipino students has been affected by the continued closure of schools due to the pandemic.
UNICEF Philippines Representative Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov said the Philippine schools were fully closed for over a year, while schools globally only for around 79 days in 2020.—LDF, GMA News
