LGU officials liable for failure to ramp up COVID-19 vaccination –DILG

The Department of the Interior and Local Government on Wednesday said local chief executives will be held liable if they fail to ramp up their COVID-19 vaccination as instructed by the national government.

At the Laging Handa public briefing, DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya pointed out that there will be legal repercussions against these officials.

“Mayroon po. Sunod-sunod ang in-issue ng aming kagawaran na mga memorandum circular tungkol sa national vaccination program,” he said.

Citing the Local Government Code of 1991, Malaya said complaints of neglect of duty or misconduct will be filed against local chief executives and department heads over indifference and unjustified failure.

Malaya warned that officials may face suspension and dismissal from service if they are found guilty.

In a statement, the DILG instructed LGUs to ramp up and intensify vaccination efforts to reach the target of having the 70% of the total population fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the end of the year.

DILG Secretary Eduardo Año told LGUs in a meeting that the national government’s target is to reach 70% of the total population with at least one dose by the end of November and 70% of the total population fully vaccinated by the end of December.

“Now that we have around 40 million doses sent to the provinces, we need to immediately jab these vaccines to the general population; thus we need the LGUs to double their efforts,” he said. — BM, GMA News
