Alan Cayetano urges presidential debates as early as November 2021

Taguig Representative and senatorial candidate Alan Peter Cayetano on Friday called for presidential debates to be conducted as early as November ahead of Eleksyon 2022.

Cayetano proposed to have a round robin weekly and monthly debate starting November 5 until February 7, which counted 90 days ahead of the official campaign period.

“Sa 90 days ng campaign sa Commision on Elections (Comelec) na ‘yan habang wala ka pang campaign etong 90 days ang mga stations, radio, television also yung mga universities at business groups pwede magbunutan at kung sino magoffer nito,” Cayetano said at a press conference.

(In the 90 days of the campaign the Comelec will supervise, while it is not yet the campaign period, for 90 days, the stations, radio, television as well as the universities and business groups can discuss and who will organize the debate.)

“The person who will be the president does not have to be the best debater but tignan natin yung sense nung ideas ng vision niya (let us look at their sense of ideas and visions) and the way they communicate,” he added.

He also proposed some topics including the COVID-19 response, economy, vision, and plans of the presidential candidates.

Asked if he would consider joining as a guest candidate among the presidential picks, Cayetano said “I will not impose, I will be grateful but I want to be able to assess the presidentiables very objectively.”

Cayetano bared that he was also planning to interview senatorial candidates on his Facebook page.

“We know so little of all of these candidates despite them being public figures and high ratings, we know so little of them. We really have to compare yung sinabi at yung gagawin (what they said to what they will do) and hold them accountable,” Cayetano said.

Cayetano filed his certificate of candidacy for senator before the Comelec in Pasay City last October 7.

The former Speaker was a member of the Senate from 2007 to 2017. His sister, Pia Cayetano, is an incumbent senator.

The campaign period for national posts is set from February 8 to May 7, 2022.

Meanwhile, the campaign period for candidates in local elective posts is set from March 25 to May 7, 2022.

The 2022 general elections will be held on May 9. -NB, GMA News
