Makabayan bloc urges immediate release of funds for Maring victims

The House Makabayan bloc has called on the national government to facilitate the immediate release of funds to help those affected by Severe Tropical Storm Maring.

In filing House Resolution 2296, the group said the funds under the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Assistance To Individuals In Crisis Situation (AICS) should be immediately released in the form of P10,000 emergency cash aid to each victim of Maring.

“The Department of Social Welfare and Development must hasten the release of its available funds to assist calamity-stricken families in Northern Luzon and other parts of the country amid the raging pandemic, high prices, and negligible government support especially to Filipino farmers,” the resolution read.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council earlier confirmed that 19 people were killed during the onslaught of the storm. Eleven more fatalities were being verified and 14 others were reported missing.

The Department of Agriculture said Maring left almost a billion pesos worth of damage to agriculture

In its bulletin issued Thursday, the DA said the damage and losses amounting to P979.97 million have been reported in the Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Bicol Region, Western Visayas, and Central Visayas.

Thousands of families in more than 200 barangays in Ilocos, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Mimaropa, and Cordillera have been hit by the weather disturbance, the NDRRMC said. — Anna Felicia Bajo/RSJ, GMA News
