A total of 16 aspirants on Saturday filed their certificates of candidacy for the May 2022 polls on the second day of the filing period at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Manila compound in Pasay City.
According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), one filed his candidacy for president, one for vice president, and five for senators.
Meanwhile, nine party lists filed their COCs.
Victoriano Inte is the sole presidential aspirant on Saturday, as Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, in a surprise move, filed his certificate of candidacy for vice president.
Inte is a barangay staff in Pasay City.
Should he win, he said he will ensure that the Philippines will exercise its rights on the West Philippine Sea and impose the decision of the arbitral tribunal, which invalidated Beijing’s massive claims over the disputed waters.
He said he will also ensure that the Philippines will retrieve the ill-gotten wealth taken by the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Those who filed their COCs for a senatorial seat included detained Kapa Community Ministry International founder Pastor Joel Apolinario, which he did through his representatives.
Apolinario was followed by broadcaster Raffy Tulfo, who said he would run as an independent to keep his loyalty to the Filipino people and not to any politician.
Seeking a comeback in the Senate, former Senator Joseph Victor “JV” Ejercito also filed his COC on Saturday.
Independent candidates Loreto “St. Loreto” Banosan and Rodelo Pidoy also filed their COCs for senator.
Meanwhile, partylists APEC, Philreca, Recoboda, Ako Padayon, Abang Lingkod PNPRA, PDP-Cares, Ang Kabuhayan, and Bagong Henerasyon.
The application of party-list Lingkod Bayanihan was rejected as they were unable to completely fill out their COCs.
Meanwhile, Mayor Sara Duterte, the President’s daughter, also filed her certificate of candidacy for her reelection as Davao City mayor in the upcoming elections.
So far, the Comelec said that a total of seven aspirants have filed their COCs for the position of president, four for vice president, 19 for senators, and 26 party-list groups.
In a live briefing, Atty. Eliza Sevilla David, a director for [Comelec] Education and Information Department, said the second day of the filing was “peaceful and orderly.”
“As witnessed by all of us here present, we had a peaceful and orderly conduct for the filing certificate of candidacy for both day 1 and day 2,” she said.
“For the local positions for today, we have not received a report of any untoward incident that has happened. We can assume that we have orderly conduct of this COC filing nationwide,” she added. —LBG, GMA News
