PDP-Laban Cusi wing exec says SWS poll on Duterte’s VP run ‘incomplete’

The Social Weather Stations’ poll on President Rodrigo Duterte’s vice presidential candidacy is “incomplete,” a PDP-Laban official aligned with Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi’s wing said on Tuesday.

Atty. Melvin Matibag, PDP-Laban secretary-general of the Cusi faction, issued the statement after the survey showed that 60% of adult Filipinos said Duterte’s vice presidential run would violate the intent of the Constitution.

“We have seen the SWS survey and we feel that the questions are incomplete. The survey only asked the respondents if they view President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to run for Vice President as unconstitutional,” Matibag said.

The PDP Laban official said the SWS should have also asked if the respondents would vote for Duterte if the Constitution allowed him to run for the second highest elective post in the country.

Matibag said  two former presidents—Joseph Estrada and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo— were “allowed to run for other public office after their respective terms as Chief Executive and they won.”

The Cusi’s faction was “encouraged” that the same survey showed that 39% wanted Duterte to run for vice president to continue his governance.

“This is a strong base in a multi-party election setting,” Matibag said.

As for the 60 percent, Matibag expressed confidence that their faction could still “convert these numbers” in their favor, noting that the rate was in “varying levels and tied to the satisfaction and trust [rating] of the administration.”

“We are mindful of the opinion of the general public but this particular survey is just a snapshot of the public sentiment in a particular time. Ultimately, the question of Constitutionality rests with the Supreme Court,” Matibag said.

The non-commissioned survey was conducted from June 23 to 26, 2021 using face-to-face interviews of 1,200 Filipino adults, with 300 each in Metro Manila, Balance Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

The same survey also showed that 75% of adult Filipinos were satisfied with Duterte’s performance as president, while 13% were dissatisfied, and 12% were still undecided.

The SWS said those who opposed Duterte’s vice presidential bid were highest among those very dissatisfied with his performance as president (88%), followed by those somewhat satisfied (83%), undecided (81%), somewhat satisfied (62%), and very satisfied (42%).

Early this September, Duterte has accepted the PDP-Laban faction’s nomination as vice president for Eleksyon 2022. -NB, GMA News
