The use of nasal sprays are for keeping nose clean and does not prevent COVID-19 infection, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said Wednesday.
FDA Director General Eric Domingo said there are nasal spray vaccines against COVID-19 being studied but these are still under clinical trial and cannot be used on individuals.
“Nasal sprays are for keeping our nose clean and offers some protection for a short period of time, but we cannot use this as substitute medicine or vaccine against COVID-19,” Domingo said during Laging Handa briefing.
“The clinical trial of these nasal spray vaccines against COVID-19 is still ongoing and results are still pending,” he added.
The FDA issued the warning on nasal sprays last September 10, saying that nasal sprays just serves as mechanical barrier from particulates, not a preventive measure against COVID-19.
As to the nasal spray vaccine under clinical trial, the World Health Organization (WHO) earlier said that such kind of vaccine aims to shut the door of the COVID-19 virus, the nose, by triggering production of antibody immunoglobulin A (IgA) that blocks COVID-19 infection.
At least 18.8 million Filipinos have been fully vaccinated so far, which is way behind the target of fully vaccinating 76.3 million people to achieve herd immunity against COVID-19.
