The supporters of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte are planning to talk with President Rodrigo Duterte to ask him to reconsider his plan to run for vice president and support her daughter’s presidential bid instead, but first they have to recruit more members.
Hugpong Para sa Sara (HPS) movement member and Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) spokesperson Anthony del Rosario admitted Friday that they do not have yet enough members to convince the younger Duterte to pursue a presidential bid.
He said they are still working on recruiting more members before taking further steps such as talking to the President who has accepted the nomination of PDP-Laban to seek the vice-presidency in 2022.
“Between now and October, we want to get the support that we need before we can try to talk to the President so he can reconsider his 2022 plans. We don’t have a schedule for that yet,” Del Rosario told GMA News Online.
“We need huge support to make Mayor Sara run for president, and we are just at 10,000 so far. Kulang pa po iyon (it is still not enough) and so we are still recruiting and talking with other groups. We are eyeing 50,000,” he added.
Del Rosario also clarified that Mayor Sara is not standing in the way of their efforts, even if the President’s daughter already called on her supporters to back her father’s planned 2022 vice presidential bid.
“She knows we are doing this in our personal capacity and with like minded individuals who believe that it is only her who has what it takes to be our next president,” he added.
Mayor Sara earlier said she will not be running for president in 2022 after her father announced that his plans because they have an agreement. She recently expressed support for the vice presidential bid of President Duterte but will not campaign for PDP-Laban.—AOL, GMA News
