PNP to look into alleged online sale of loose firearms

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Police General Guillermo Eleazar on Monday ordered the Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to look into the alleged sale of loose firearms online.

In a statement, Eleazar ordered an intensified information-gathering and monitoring on the illegal activity after thousands of disassembled firearms and ammunition were found in a warehouse in Bulacan.

“In our aggressive campaign against loose firearms as part of the early security preparations for the 2022 elections, we are not discounting the possibility that some gun-running syndicates are using the online platforms for their illegal activities,” he said.

Citing initial investigation, Eleazar said the seized firearms and ammunition in Bulacan were being reassembled to be sold to private armed groups, some through online platforms.

Most of the confiscated parts were from caliber .50 and M16 rifles.

National Capital Region Police chief Police Major General Vicente Danao Jr. believes these parts were police- and military-issued items that were not properly disposed of.

According to the PNP, the military has vowed to investigate into the matter and determine the source of the firearms.

Eleazar pointed out that the problems in loose firearms should be addressed already considering that the election period is already coming, where they can be used for violence and sabotage.

“Guns are the common instrument in committing crimes that is why we have to step our preemptive campaign through aggressive operations against those who sell them illegally,” he said. —Joviland Rita/KBK, GMA News
