House gives final nod to bill compensating Marawi siege victims

The House of Representatives on Monday approved on third and final reading the measure seeking to provide compensation to qualified claimants for the damage of residential and commercial properties due to the Marawi siege.

A total of 197 affirmative votes were recorded for House Bill 9925 or An Act Providing Monetary Compensation to Qualified Claimants, through the Task Force Bangon Marawi, for the Loss or Destruction of Residential and Commercial Properties as a Result of the 2017 Armed Conflict Between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Terrorist Groups in Marawi City, Lanao Del Sur, and Appropriating Funds therefor.

The bill creates and institutionalizes the Task Force Bangon Marawi to achieve the objectives set in the Marawi Recovery, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Program (MRRP).

It compensates all private properties demolished as part of the implementation of the MRRP.

The measure grants private property owners a replacement cost for loss or destruction of property resulting from the MRRP.

Deputy Speaker and Basilan Representative Mujiv Hataman welcomed the approval of the measure on final reading, saying that this could give Marawi residents a new beginning.

“I am extremely grateful to all my colleagues in the House for seeing the importance of helping those in Marawi who, for over four years, have yet to rebuild their lives from the war that killed many of their loved ones, destroyed their houses, burned their livelihood, and taken so much from their families,” he said.

Hataman urged the Senate, particularly members of the Senate Special Committee on the Marawi Rehabilitation, to expedite the approval of the counterpart measure in the chamber, which is Senate Bill No. 1395.—LDF, GMA News
