The social pension of indigent senior citizens will be released every three months starting the first quarter of 2022, the Department of Social Welfare and Development said Wednesday.
Currently, the release of the monthly social pension at P500 per beneficiary is every six months.
“We intend to implement the payout for every quarter starting this first quarter of year 2022,” DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista said during the House budget hearing on the proposed 2022 budget of the agency.
It was House Deputy Speaker Rufus Rodriguez who asked about the release of the social pension.
Earlier, the House Committee on Senior Citizens adopted the resolution urging the DSWD to release the monthly social pension of senior citizens on a quarterly basis.
The resolution, introduced by Rodriguez, cited DSWD’s Memorandum Circular 4-2019, noting that the release of the monthly social pension at P500 per beneficiary will be done every six months or P3,000 per semester.
For Rodriguez, the period of waiting is too long.
The resolution further states that due to the lockdowns implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic, many businesses have struggled and this resulted in a number of Filipinos losing their jobs, including senior citizens.—LDF, GMA News
