COVID-19 mom goes through five hours of labor in car

A 28-year-old mother was forced to go through labor inside their car for over five hours after she tested positive for COVID-19.

Jamie Gumanit recalled how she painstakingly went through labor in August 2020 as they had to choose other hospitals for her labor because she tested positive for COVID-19 at a lying-in clinic.

They went to other hospitals but she was still positive for COVID-19.

“Lord ano bang mangyayari sa akin sa mga susunod na oras kasi manganaganak na ako eh… Tapos dun sa ibang ospital eh hindi ko naman kakilala ‘yun mga nandun eh,”  Gumanit said over Lilian Tiburcio’s “Stand for Truth” report.

(Lord what will happen to me in the next hours because I have to give birth. At other hospitals, I don’t know the people there.)

Gumanit said she is also scared for her baby’s life, who might also get infected.

With no options left, Gumanit and her husband returned to the lying-in clinic. Then, the midwife at the clinic wore PPE and helped deliver Gumanit’s baby inside their car.

After long hours of labor, Gumanit could not even kiss her baby. She immediately wore her face mask to ensure that her baby would not contract the virus.

“‘Di ko siya nahalikan. Nahawakan ko lang siya, okay na okay na ako,” she said.

(I could not even kiss her. I just held her and everything was okay.)

Nevertheless, Gumanit was thankful that her baby was negative for COVID-19.

According to Department of Health (DOH), they do not require negative swab tests for women who are going through labor but some hospitals still mandate patients to secure negative results.—Consuelo Marquez/LDF, GMA News
