The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) on Friday said it would look into reports of online sports betting involving social media influencers.
PAGCOR chairperson Andrea Domingo gave the commitment after Deputy Speaker Bienvenido Abante Jr. talked about the so-called ‘Battle of the YouTubers’ during the briefing called by the House appropriations committee on the proposed 2022 national budget.
Abante said bets could go as high as P2 million.
“May sumisikat na online betting na tinatawag na ‘Battle of the YouTubers’ na kung saan umaabot sa up to P2 million ang taya per event. Nagkakaroon sila ng (There is an online betting activity that is now gaining prominence called ‘Battle of the YouTubers’ where the bets reach up to P2 million per event. They have) once a week event for the past six months now,” he said.
“At dito po hindi mga manok ang naglalaban kundi mga YouTube influencers na karamihan ay mga kabataan through live basketball and boxing matches.”
Abante added: “Kailangan lang nila magpa register (They only need to register) using their mobile number, once registered they need to cash in through GCash amounting to P200, at ang minimum bet para tumalpak ay P100.”
Domingo said she only learned about the scheme through Abante, adding her agency does not issue licenses to such activities.
“I really appreciate you sharing it with us, so I am going to have somebody look into it very closely,” she said.
She also said such activities should be reported to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).—AOL, GMA News
