LP members propose first 5 senators for Eleksyon 2022

Members of the Liberal Party on Friday proposed their first five possible Senate candidates for the 2022 elections as they called for unity within the opposition.

During the first Chapter General Assembly, former Ifugao Representative and Party Vice President for Internal Affairs Teddy Baguilat said that three of the five are seeking reelection.

“Dalawa sa kanila ay Liberal Party members, at isa naman ay dati na nating kaalyado: we have our Party President Senator Francis Pangilinan, si Senator Leila de Lima, at si Senator Risa Hontiveros,” Baguilat said.

(Two of them are Liberal Party members and one is a former ally: We have our Party President Senator Francis Pangilinan, Senator Leila de Lima, and Senator Risa Hontiveros.)

Baguilat said former Senator Bam Aquino and human rights lawyer Chel Diokno have also expressed “a desire or openness to be part of our Senate slate.”

“Kasama na rin ang dalawa pa na maaaring kandidato… Si dating Senator Bam Aquino at si Atty. Chel Diokno,” he said.

(This includes two other possible candidates… former Senator Bam Aquino and Atty. Chel Diokno.)

Diokno, who was named one of opposition coalition 1Sambayan’s nominees for president and vice president, previously said he is still unsure which position to seek.

Meanwhile, Aquino has said that seeking a Senate seat is not part of his priorities as he will focus on building the opposition coalition ahead of Eleksyon 2022.

According to Baguilat, the party needs to start talking about the senators the members would support in the upcoming elections.

“Malaking katuwang ng executive ang Senado. Kinakailangan simulan na nating pag-usapan ‘yung ating mga susuportahan na kandidato for the Senate,” he said.

(The Senate is an important partner to the executive. We have to start discussing which candidates we are supporting for the Senate.)

Over 250 participants representing 154 chapters from across the country joined the virtual general assembly.
