Well-loved Ateneo philosophy professor Fr. Ferriols dies at 96

Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday announced that their well-loved philosophy professor Fr. Roque Angel Jamias Ferriols, SJ has passed away at 96 years old.

On Twitter, ADMU posted a photo of the professor as they announced the sad news.

“At 12:24am, August 15, 2021, on the Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady, our dearest Fr Roque Angel Jamias Ferriols SJ passed on to eternal life. He celebrates his 97th birthday in heaven on August 16, 2021,” the tweet read.

According to Ateneo’s website, Ferriols who is known as “Padre Roque” had taught in ADMU for over 40 years.

Also, the website indicated that he can be credited with “almost single-handedly promoting the teaching of philosophy in Filipino.”

His efforts at promoting the study of philosophy in Filipino led him to edit, translate, and write various books, the Ateneo website added.

Among those published are “Mga Sinaunang Griyego” — a translation of selected texts from the Pre-Socratics to Aristotle; “Magpakatao” — a collection he edited, containing translations of texts exploring the theme of being human; and his original writings “Pambungad sa Metapisika and Pilosopiya ng Relihiyon.”

The Ateneo website said “these four books earned him National Book Awards from the Manila Critics’ Circle. “

In 1989, the Ateneo de Manila University conferred him with the Gawad Tanglaw ng Lahi. —LBG, GMA News
