28 foreign fugitives arrested in first half of 2021 –BI

A total of 28 foreign fugitives were arrested by the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in the first six months of the year, slightly lower compared to same period in 2020.

The BI apprehended 32 alien fugitives from January to June 2020.

“While admittedly we had much difficulty as our field operatives face exposure to [the COVID-19] virus, our officers remain steadfast in their duty to cleanse the country of these unwanted aliens,” Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said on Monday.

Most of the fugitives arrested were already deported and are now serving sentences for their crimes, according to BI fugitive search unit chief Rendel Sy. He said they were also included in the BI blacklist and banned from reentering the country.

South Koreans, who were wanted for fraud and illegal gambling, topped the list of the arrested fugitives (19). The rest were four Americans, a Japanese, a French, an Italian, a Polish, and a Bahraini national.

The BI arrested 425 foreign fugitives, the biggest on record, in 2019, and 260 in 2018. —LDF, GMA News
